During Spring Break, underage drinking laws are strictly enforced in Destin and Fort Walton Beach. The Okaloosa and Walton County Sheriff’s Offices patrol the beach and adjacent neighborhoods looking for violators. The deputies are in uniforms and plain clothes, on foot and on ATVs.
They carry detection devices to sample drink containers of anyone they suspect is underage. The deputies are trained to detect alcohol masked in a soda can, plastic cup or other attempts to disguise consumption. They will go on private property if the violation is in plain sight.
If caught, a violator will be issued a notice to appear in court. In some instances, violators can be arrested, taken to a jail 35 miles from the beaches and required to post bond in order to be released from custody. The consequences of a conviction or plea of guilt can impact a person for years.
