That varies from case to case. I typically charge an hourly rate in the dissolution proceeding. I will initially meet with a potential client and get a detailed history of the marriage. I will get a feel for the complexity of the issues and for the expectations of the potential client. Based upon the amount of the work that I perceive that will be required I will quote an initial retainer. I’m not dodging your question, I’m just trying to be fair to myself and to the potential client. Sometimes in the matter of a simplified dissolution where there are no children, no property to be distribute and neither party is seeking spousal support, I will charge a flat rate.
